American Red Cross Blood Region Wins PR Industry's Highest International Honor

Thursday, July 21, 2005 — The Communications and Marketing Department of the American Red Cross Southern California Biomedical (Blood) Region, led by Marc Jackson, recently received the 2005 Gold World Award from the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) in the Issues Management category.

The award was given to the Red Cross blood region for a program focused on education and awareness regarding risk behaviors and the safety of the blood supply. The Red Cross program was one of 239 entries considered by a panel of 44 senior public relations practitioners from 26 countries for this year’s IPRA Gold World Award, and the Red Cross team was one of only two in-house agencies to receive the award.

“I am very proud of my staff,” said Jackson. “I am honored and humbled to work with such a fine group of professionals.”

IPRA is the premier association for senior international public relations professionals and presents the awards for organizations that display exceptional quality and skills. Entrants must show the competence and quality of each entry demonstrated in terms of research, planning, execution and evaluation, the clarity of messages, creativity and ethics, as well as local conditions in the country of origin.

This program has won three communicator awards: an International Association of Business Communicators Silver Quill Award, a Silver Best Overall Public Relations Campaign from Healthcare Marketing Report, and an American Society of Professional Communicators Masters Award.

The American Red Cross provides nearly half of the nation's blood supply (collecting more than 6 million units a year from volunteer donors) to patients in 3,000 hospitals across the country through its national network. Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. The Red Cross must collect blood donations each and every day to meet the needs of accident victims, cancer patients and children with blood disorders, and the organization works to accomplish this through its 36 Blood Services regions.
