Current Projects

Support for Vulnerable Russian Children
This American Red Cross/Russian Red Cross program emphasizes proactive abandonment-prevention activities in order to reverse the trend of growth in the number of abandoned children in Russia. The project’s objectives are to improve the coping behaviors used by street children to address their basic needs and increase the capacity of at-risk families to care for their children in the home. The program also aims to improve the living conditions and quality of care for institutionalized children and enhance the capacity of Russian Red Cross branches to raise funds through improved grant writing skills.

HIV/AIDS Care and Support Program
The American Red Cross is supporting the Russian Red Cross to conduct an HIV/AIDS care and support project to benefit more than 11,000 people living in Irkutsk City. The Russian Red Cross Visiting Nurse Service, with over 40 years of experience providing home-based care, and the Russian Red Cross youth volunteer network are the frontline implementers of the project. The project’s goal is to achieve improved quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and children born to HIV-infected mothers. The project's objectives are to promote healthy behavior and to develop disease management skills for PLWHA, decrease stigma and discrimination for PLWHA, to reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and to create favorable conditions for normal mental and physical development of children born to HIV positive mothers.
